The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) provides monthly benefits that can be used to buy groceries at many local stores and markets. Eligibility for SNAP depends on factors like household income, resources, and immigration status. To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen or have held a green card for at least five years.

  • Non-students: Eligibility is based mainly on household income and size, along with meeting other federal requirements.
  • College students: Federal rules are more restrictive, but you may qualify if you meet income requirements and one of the following applies:
    • You have dependents.
    • You work at least 20 hours per week.
    • You qualify for or currently hold a federal work-study position.
    • You have a disability or a temporary condition that prevents you from working.

Meeting one of these criteria does not guarantee eligibility — it simply allows you to apply. Final eligibility is determined during the application process.

If you are a University of Iowa student, faculty, or staff member interested in SNAP, feel free to email studorg-foodpantry@uiowa.edu. Our team can connect you with Lisa Spitler, our local Food Assistance Outreach Specialist, who can answer questions and guide you through the application.

Applying is free. The initial application usually takes about 20-30 minutes, followed by a short interview (often by phone). You may also be asked to provide documents such as proof of income, student status, or work-study eligibility.

Clothing Options

Due to IMU renovations, Basic Needs at Iowa has less access to storage space than in previous years. As a result, we've decided to temporarily pause the majority of Clothing Closet operations. Cold weather gear (coats, hats, gloves, etc.) will still be distributed out of the Food Pantry's IMU location. Individuals looking for other clothing can discover more options at the link below.
