Hi! My name is Aparna and I'm a junior majoring in Biochemistry with a certificate in Clinical and Translational Sciences and Global Health Studies. I became passionate about food insecurity, health and nutrition after conducting an 8-week internship in the Philippines as a World Food Prize Borlaug-Ruan Intern at the International Rice Research Institute(IRRI) after my senior year of high school. During my internship, I conducted research analyzing ways to combat hunger and malnutrition by increasing nutrient content of rice and analyzing the rice preferences of farmers and rural consumers in the Nueva Ecija Province. After coming back in to the states, I was inspired to combat hunger in my own community and got involved with the food pantry steering committee and the Food Pantry at Iowa during my sophomore year spring semester. It has been amazing to see how far the Food Pantry at Iowa has come and grown since last year and am excited to see what it achieves in the future! Some of my roles in the Food Pantry at Iowa include building and running our website, running our social media pages, strengthening partnerships and outreach with organizations in the Iowa City area and helping organize and run outreach events. Aside from being involved in the Food Pantry, I am a ICRU research ambassador, Honors Program Ambassador, Latham Science and Engagement Initiative Fellow and hospital volunteer. In my free time I love grabbing froyo with friends, watching netflix, playing my flute and traveling!
